With all due respect (stop making fun of our acne)

Stop making fun of people with acne.

Stop even pointing it out. We know. It's the biggest blotchiest elephant in the room. For some, it's the biggest hurdle of social anxiety. It's the thing that's caused our low self esteem, our heads hung low and our hesitant nature to look at another person in the eye. I know, I've been through it, still going through it, albeit, thank god it's not as bad anymore.

But every single time I hear someone point out the reddish zits on someone's face, I can't help but feel immensely annoyed.

Look buddy, for some, even changing their lifestyle or food choices can't cut it. For some, the problem lies in heredity and acne can still plague a person way over their 20's all the way into adulthood. It's such a cruel thing to look at someone suffering from acne and point out how 'gross' or 'disgusting' their face looks. Some, like myself, have ruined our skin with more zits and scars with the harsh treatments we thought were going to make a difference. Do you know how it feels like to wake up in the morning and avoid the mirror because you are afraid of how hideous you look?

Stop telling us to wear makeup to cover it up. Some of us have sensitive skin and can't wear too much makeup - in fear that it might irritate the skin even more. Why should we cover up our pimples? Why should you be in command of how we should look? I've gotten so many comments before, asking me why I don't wear makeup to cover up the blemishes on my face, that I will look so much pleasant if I do cover it up. Have you ever considered for even a god-damned minute; that that minuscule comment you've just made might have just crushed someone's world?

"It's out of concern," some say, appalled. "We thought you didn't know."

A good portion of what attracts people to you is not how you look, as much as that matters so much in this post-modernistic narcissistic world. I chastise the idea: to be visually beauteous is to be right, and anything else, wrong, that's an awful stigma that should be banished. Stop making it seem as if having acne is an abhorrent problem that the world should not come witness to.

It's not wrong, it's not wrong, it's not wrong. Stop making fun of people with acne.

We don't need finger wagging, we don't need constant updates about how our skin looks like. We don't need you to tell us how horrid we look, we are not here to impress you. It's not like we want to look like this. Some of us suffer from depression, hiding in our houses all day long because we are afraid to go out looking like this, feeling the shame: not from the zits but from the stares of people.

Judging, they stare.

Why should we be ashamed to wear our skin? Rule of thumb: it's not your position to tell us what to do. I've suffered acne for a good 7 years of my life and I've heard the most ridiculously asinine comments that range from "Don't you wash your face," to "Why don't you wear some concealer on that".  Don't be ignorant. Please, for lord sake.

People's expectations of how you look are based on over-exaggerated popular media, over-saturated beauty advertisements. Beauty should not be something that can be put on, taken off or diminished with physical flaws. Anyone who tells you differently are shallow, misguided souls, honestly if they are so, they are not worth your time.

Idolized actors and actresses with "perfect" looking skin are considered physically appealing, but it's because they are under the spotlight of public scrutiny. Not to mention they probably can afford the luxury of highly priced dermatology work. Some of us can't, some of us have the misfortune that some products just don't work on our skin.

Please, for those who have suffered, or are still suffering from acne, you are not alone. Hang in there, keep your head up high. It's not easy to ignore the constant berating and bullying, but nothing worth having ever is.
