Quick explanation of Sebum:  

Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum which is responsible for keeping the skin and hair moisturized. Sebum is a light yellow, oily fluid.

During adolescence, sebaceous glands enlarge and produce more sebum under the influence of hormones called androgens. After about age 20, sebum production begins to decrease. (yeah right I'm 20 but my face is still so oily)

Sebum produced by the sebaceous gland combines with cells being sloughed off within the hair follicle and "fills up" the hair follicle. When the follicle is "full," the sebum spreads over the skin surface giving the skin an oily appearance. When this process works correctly, the skin is moisturized and remains healthy.

If not enough sebum is produced, the skin is dry. On the other hand, if too much sebum is produced the skin is oily, a condition called seborrhea. If sebum gets trapped in the pores, acne can develop.

A lot of people who have both conditions – skin sensitivity and oily skin tend to place more emphasis on choosing products that help with their skin sensitivity. This is not enough. Excess sebum generated will deteriorate as skin gets more alkaline, turning into irritants to cause flare-ups within the skin layers.

Hence it is important to choose products that effectively control skin sensitivity while reducing sebum secretion from the source.

Ceramide is THE essential ingredient in skin as it replenishes and helps retain moisture, strengthening the skin’s resilience as a natural barrier against external irritants. The lack of ceramide weakens this natural barrier, causing skin to be more susceptible to irritants.

Cause of oily skin: Excess sebum secretion 

Diet and changes in hormone levels can lead to excess sebum secretion. Not only does this result in
an unwanted oily shine on the face, excess sebum on skin that is not thoroughly removed can be
damaging to the skin as well.



Healthy skin has a pH level of 5.5. When the pH level of skin changes, excess sebum disintegrates
into an irritating substance that penetrates into the skin and causes skin sensitivity from within.

When the skin’s barrier function is weakened due to the lack of ceramide, it will be even more susceptible to the damage from disintegrated sebum.

One: Strengthening skin barrier function 

Understanding the importance of ceramide in skin, Curél has made ceramide the key ingredient for
